Plainfield: Cohort 2 – Day 4 – Digital Media
Plainfield School District Tagged CMSCE, Digital, Plainfield, Rutgers, UDL June 20th, 2008Today we reviewed the characteristics of useful digital media and evaluated websites to determine how we could utilize them in the UDL classroom to support the learning of all students. Choose a website, or digital resource, and write a recommendation for teaching colleagues. Name the site, or tool, explain why the teacher should consider it, and describe how it could be used in the UDL classroom. Use those persuasive skills to get colleagues to use new tools to ensure that all students learn.

I have discovered (during my UDL training) a website that is a valuable resource for you as you teach science. The site is http://www.sheppardsoftware.com. It has games that teach, reteach, and review the food chain. Students drag the items to the proper place on the chain. It has visuals and script.

Using sheppardsoftware.com will help the teacher differentiate and individualize instruction for their students. Also, there is an assessment component available that will can help lower students’ anxiety when testing.

I plan to go back into all of the links to further try out off of the stuff. This one was particularly useful: http://www.sheppardsoftware.com. The food chain exercise will be useful in my 6th grade science classes

The UDL training was too short for all of the information Heather had to offer. I would love for her to present another workshop to continue how to use all of the tools our computers have to offer. Mixing UDL and all of the tools on the computer would allow us to grow even further in our educational goals.

Wow! So much great information. I liked all of the different possibilities – including the sound in Word.
Since I will be working primarily with bilingual kindergartners, this is a great tool to connect and expand on the specific words we’re learning that week along with pictures and questions that they can answer with a friend.

Today I learned how flexible the UDL tools are for the teacher and the student. The possibilities are many. I added several websites to my del.icio.us site. The sheppardsoftware is good for differentiated instruction. I appreciate learning about Word and the audio function. Everything I learned today is useable in my class and will improve instruction and learning, keeping up with the digital technological world our students live in.

Today’s workshop was informative and engaging. I will highly recommend the UDL workshops to my colleagues.

Heather you provided so much great information. I thought I was using all the possibilities in Word until you introduced the sound in Word.
I will be work primarily with bilingual students and I really think this is a great tool to connect and expand on oral speech. Students can write and read right on the same program. The UDL training was too short for all of the information you had to offer. I would love for you to present another workshop to continue with the training of the use of the tools our computers have to offer.

Since all classes have different types of learners I see how all students will tremendously benefit from using digital media. There is an enormous amount of educational websites out there. Instead of browsing all over in the Internet we can just create a network in my del.icio.us account and view all those exciting websites that some of our colleagues think are kids friendly.
June 20th, 2008 at 9:08 am
My favorite site is del.icio.us – I love having a bookmarking tool I can access anywhere I can go online, being able to see others’ ideas about great tools, and being able to organize it (using the tags) so I can find what I need easily.

I found this day to be a very valuable day. I loved the tools that were introduced will be a useful assest to the science class. I found the science glossary website useful http://www.hbschool.com/glossary/science/ and the additional tools for word such as including voice or using speech).

Have you tried this workshop? If not, ask your administrator or supervisors to contact Rutgers to schedule this workshop again. The use of sheppardsoftware.com and the use of speak (Microsoft)were invaluable tools. These items engage the reluctant readers and those that need an additional example. I highly recommend this workshop.

I found a great website for english teachers who are looking for online short stories. http://www.sffworld.com is a site that deals with mainly sci-fi short stories however it does cover horror, and fantasy as well. I have used this site specifically to bring some short stories into the classroom. Not only can you give the students a printed text, but you can also have them read it on the internet. If a student does decide to read other stories as well, then it has not only done its job in the classroom but also added another reader to the ranks of students who may be less motivated to read.

I was really impressed with http://www.iflipr.com. Not only would I use this site with my students, but wiht my own children as well. iFlipr is an online flashcard site. You can access previously created cards and/or create your own. It is a fantastic tool.

Yes Nicole, I also enjoyed this Professional Development opportunity. I found the text to speech site very interesting, and I am going to immediatly implement it with one of my students. What are you going to implement from todays workshop?

The workshop today was excellent. There are many websites and tools available to enhance teaching and learning. It is always refreshing to learn new technology to keep up with the demanding changes of today’s youth. Slideshare.net is a great way to have students work on a common project without having to meet at the same place. iflpr.com was also excellent to help students review concepts for math. Excellent resources!
