Day 5 Plainfield – Digital Media
Plainfield School District Tagged CMSCE, Digital, Plainfield, Rutgers, UDL June 3rd, 2008Today we reviewed the characteristics of useful digital media and evaluated websites to determine how we could utilize them in the UDL classroom to support the learning of all students. Choose a website, or digital resource, and write a recommendation for teaching colleagues. Name the site, or tool, explain why the teacher should consider it, and describe how it could be used in the UDL classroom. Use those persuasive skills to get colleagues to use new tools to ensure that all students learn.

The digital resource that I would recommend would be a resource that gives you different options on how the lesson is presented. Today we looked at a site that gave the learner the option of reading the text, listening to the text or watching the speech on-line. This helps to give the students the least restrictive environment. As a teacher we are expected to adhere to the CCS, but as we know not every student learns in the same way. By presenting the lesson in a manner that the student can pick the best way that they learn, the educator has the best chance of fullfilling their objectives.

As I am a special ed teacher, highlighting is probably the best tool for my children. The students need to see or read words in “pieces”, this website is an excellent tool for my students.

In chapter 3 of “Teaching Every Student in the Digital Age,” we read about, experienced, and discussed the use of digital media. this tool can be helpful in any classroom environment. it offers students multiple ways of learning.

The resource that i would recommend is the one where the students can test themselves and play educational games. as a special education teacher this is a great way for my students to use digital media

UDL has been a great workshop about digital media and reaching to all students in the class. I loved delicious as a way to be connected to everyone and getting great sites. I loved sheppardsoftware because I can use it in my Kindergarten class. I’m hoping to get better with UDL and their tools. Thanks.

Today’s workshop provided me with more time to actively use internet resources. I was able to browse and add many sites to my del.icio.us account that will assist me next school year. The sample lessons viewed on the website will help me to plan my own future lessons. The extended time exploring has helped me to fully understand the various internet sites.

Dear Collegue, I really think you should try http://www.americanrethoric.com . You can engage your ELL students easily since you are providing them with video, image, sound and text to follow along with the speech you are presenting. They can try the tool as many times as they need. They can adjust volume and image. They can read and re-read as many times as they need. They can even try to read at the same pace as the original speaker. The best of all, they are exposed to real and native language linked to history and current events. This site is awesome. Try it!

I loved http://www.sheppardsoftware.com
It provides ample opportunities for students to work at their own pace on fun, educational, science, math and social studies games. The site offers the students lots of visuals. At the end, it assesses the student on his/her performance. Student has a choice to go back and practice more. I would definetely recommend this to all of my colleagues for its content usefulnes and ease of use.

The overall workshop has definetly opened my eyes to use more digital media within my ESL classes. Although I cant use some of these tools on the smart board or pernethiam unless done along with the classroom teacher,I can’t wait to start using some of the tools we learned on my laptop. Some of those tools will be bubble.us and awesome highliter(once kinks are corrected!). And I’m finally getting more familiar with using my delious account. Now it’s all starting to come together… Thanks so much for the excellent resources!!!

Your blog just came up in my daily “Google Alerts” for UDL. I work at CAST and am happy to see all your good work! One resource you may not have heard of yet (we just developed it in partnership with Google and released it in May) is the UDL Editions–a free resource for struggling readers. Check it out if you get a chance and let me know what you think.

Also, if any of you get a chance over the next few months, we would love to hear your comments on the newly released UDL Guidelines, version 1.0 — aimed at helping teachers create UDL lessons. It’s a bit of a long read but you may find it useful going forward. Here’s the link to the blog where you can share ideas/comments:

Best of luck,
